Back in 1998, when I was a senior in seminary, I was assigned to pastor a small church in New Jersey. Just down the street was a Korean congregation whose parking lot was always full.
One day, I visited their pastor to see what I could learn. His answer surprised me: “To be successful, you have to spend at least five hours a day in prayer.”
Five hours? I still haven’t gotten there. But what I have discovered is this: the path to becoming an effective leader is not found in charisma, cleverness, or connections—it is found on your knees.
Prayer is not preparation for the work. Prayer is the work.
Scripture says: “But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” (Luke 5:16)
If Jesus needed prayer to lead His mission, how much more do we? Time with God in secret brings clarity, courage, and compassion in public.
So here’s your reminder today: before you run, first bow. Leading well always starts with kneeling low.

Until next time - grace, peace, and every blessing.

also, john Wesley would share with his congregation, that he had a full day ahead so he needed to pray more.
