Civic Engagement & You

Voting is a critical civic duty and a powerful way to contribute to the democratic process, and it holds significant meaning within the context of church teachings and community engagement. Many religious traditions emphasize the importance of participating in societal governance, viewing it as a way to advocate for justice, support the common good, and uphold ethical values. Mt. Zion often encourages its members to vote as a means of fulfilling their moral and spiritual responsibilities.

By casting a ballot, individuals influence the decision-making processes that affect their communities, from local issues to national policies. Voting is not just about choosing leaders but also about endorsing policies and initiatives that reflect one's values and beliefs. For many congregations, promoting voter participation is part of their mission to build a just and compassionate society. It underscores the idea that faith can inspire and guide civic engagement.

Maryland requirements

In Maryland, voter participation begins with registration. To register to vote, you must be a U.S. citizen, a Maryland resident, and at least 16 years old (though you must be 18 by the general election to actually vote). Registration can be done online, by mail, or in person. The deadline to register online or by mail is 21 days before the election. If you miss this deadline, you can still register and vote in person at your local election office up to and including Election Day.

Early voting starts on Thursday, October 24, 2024, and goes through Thursday, October 31, 2024. Each early voting center will be open continuously from 7 am to 8 pm each day. Anyone in line at 8 pm will be allowed to vote.

For more details and to check your registration or to register online, visit the Maryland State Board of Elections website: Maryland Voter Registration. Ensuring that you are registered and aware of deadlines is essential for participating in the democratic process.

Churches play a pivotal role in encouraging their members to vote, fostering a sense of responsibility and empowerment that aligns with spiritual teachings about stewardship and justice. Voting becomes a practical expression of faith, contributing to the well-being of society and reflecting the values that guide religious communities.
