In 1955, an 11-year-old African American girl named Donna Jean Barksdale was among the first Black students to integrate an all-white school in Hoxie, Arkansas. On her first day, she took a front-row seat and was notably left alone by white students. This integration was part of the Hoxie School District's voluntary decision to desegregate its schools, a move that initially proceeded without incident. However, on August 3, 1955, approximately 350 segregationists gathered in Hoxie City Hall to protest the integrated schools, leading to a boycott the following day.
